Practicum Days: Day 2

Beautiful morning as usual...

Students greeted me and they smiled. Cheerful as they go...

Sheila was there early (as usual)...
Stuck outside the office, waiting to punch her card.

Yes, we have 'punch card' system. Even trainees have this privilege.

Most importantly, It kept us on time.
It kept 'me' on time....

As we walk towards the teachers' room, warm greetings coloured our way.
Instantly made the day even better.

We sat down and chatted. Weren't sure what we'll be doing today..
Hoping that everything will be fine.
Please be fine... Please be fine....
.
.

Minutes passed,
The PK1 gave us our teaching time tables....
10 hours of teaching per week. Not bad...

As we go through the time tables, a 'bonus slip' came towards us.

Suspense music playing at the background...

Jeng! Jeng! Jeng!

It's a slip for the Relief Class. It was my first...

Sheila got 3 relief classes today. I only have one... yippeeee....

So we went around school buildings trying to find out the location of the classes.

Mine was at the end of the building....

The last class of all form four classes.

Form 4 Al-Ghazali

Calmly I walked towards the class...

I can clearly hear naughty whispers and loud chatters as I walked through the corridor.

Childish game.... I'm over it.

I walked into the class..

"All stand up... Good Morning Teacher"... They were Loud and clear.

Usually I would let them sit, but I needed to make sure that everyone was there. 27 of them.. few were missing...

To my surprise, they recite a Do'a..... as if like I'm there to teach them Islamic Studies.

Some of them were surprised as well... Because the naughty boys lead the prayers.

They made me smile and then they sat down.

Those who were missing had some other programme that day...

I looked at them blankly...

There was a boy eating his nasi lemak, a girl who's just sleepy and landing on the table, few girls were busy doing their homework. The naughty boys were silent...

Their eyes were on me...
Analyzing my speech...
Predicting my move...

I never signed up for this. This is too sudden, I don't know what to do with them.

I asked them to introduce themselves....
It was basically a background checkup.
Most of them lives near by...
One girl is from my place.

The whole hour was basically a question and answer sessions with the students.
I interrogated them...
They interrogated me...

Them: Teacher, are you married..?
Me: I'm going to get married...
Them: Awwwwhhhhh....(They faked their disappointment) haha..
Them: Teacher, are you engaged...?
Me: I'm going to get engaged...
Them: (They shook their heads and laugh away)
Them: How old are you teacher?
Me: I'm in my 20s
Them: 22? 23? 29? and then a boy shouted...
"I know!!! It's Twenty Eleven!!"

Hahahhahahahahah! Hillarious.. We all laughed.

Hours had passed without even realizing it.

The naughty boys seemed engrossed with the discussions.. few students were listening while doing their own work.

Few minutes before the class ends, I asked them about their passion.
Some of them liked music, some of them preferred art, math and other stuff..

I concluded the day by advising them to follow their dreams and passion. To never give up and that there will be more challenges that they have to face in the future...

As I was saying all these stuff, I can feel their concern.
Their anxiety.. Their exasperation.

I know some of them have difficulties in their studies and troubles at home..

It almost teared me that they would sit still and listen intently to what I was saying.
as if I feel that They really believe that they too can make something out of themselves.

There's light in their eyes...

It was weird. I cared for them.
I think I've fallen in love with all of them...
Especially the naughty ones....

When it was time to go, I said: "so I'll leave you now"...

They replied :" I love you too teacher"....

and with that, they made me laugh...
(Did they hear something else coming out of my mouth? haha..

Back in the teachers' room...
Another assignment came in:

We were invited to be part of Facilitators' team for
'Self-esteem Camps' and 'Leadership Courses for the prefects...

(There goes my weekend!)
But I'm sure we'll gain something out of this... :)

--------
.
.

After breakfast, Sheila and I and parted ways to our assigned classes.

I needed to observe the class that I'm going to teach next week.

So, there I was... Sitting at the back of the class..
Can't help but feel like I'm becoming school student again..

Listening to my former teacher teaching almost the same things she taught me during school back in those days...

It's amazing how things works out.

Never in my dreams have I imagined that this day would come.

.
.
.

The lesson went smoothly and I got to get to know my students better. ^^

It's a good class to teach.

I'm nervous and excited to finally be teaching them.
--------
.
.

Before we went back home, there was a meeting.

This coming Thursday we'll be organizing 'Education For Life' Carnival

The whole school will be participating.

There will be games and prizes...

Poetry writing and singing competition...

and
much much more.

and

I hope it'd be much much fun!

Practicum Days: Day 1

6.43am we're in the school compound, a warm smile greeted us.

Familiar faces of my past.... familiar places of my youth...

Finally I am back... serving my 'former school..

I am here now! But It feels so surreal...

Am I dreaming? am I seeing things?
(a small piece of me had hoped so..)

The assembly is about to start and we took our seats.

The students are curious.... I can feel their anticipations..

There were few announcements, there was prize giving ceremony, and they sang a birthday song for the teachers...

It felt like a blast from the past...

I did all those things... Once upon a time.

An hour has passed....

I feel like I'm in someone else's dream..
Walking in my own memories..

She greeted us... "Cikgu, saya nak cikgu memperkenalkan diri dgn murid2" .... warm smile..

This is not a dream. This one is real..

My heart jumped! I'm wide awake now. My mind is racing...
Words jumbled up in my mind..

There were a few more announcements, including a fiery speech about loving our Malay language.

We had planned to introduce ourselves in English. Somehow, that speech made us think twice.

.
.
.
.

Few minutes had passed.....
My blood flow is normal again.
I tried to stay as calm as I could.
Positive thinking..... Positive thinking.... Positive thinking....
There's no place to run now....
I had naughty thoughts on escaping...

The voice through the speaker pulled me back into reality..
......"now, we are welcoming 3 new members of this school, teachers, please introduce yourself"

Blood flow is building up speed now...
what was the introduction line I made just now?
we're speaking in what language now?

Dub.. Dab.. Dub.. Dab.. My rib cage almost burst opened...

Holding on to the microphone:
One deep breath... and Here goes..........

"Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh."
sheer silence.......... all focus was on me.
"A very good morning everyone"
.................. everyone cheered.
People clapping their hands.
"I'm Miss Dewi Haikal from IPGM Gaya Campus bla... bla... bla..."
Thus, the cheer grew bigger... and bigger.

I'm aware of it...
The Self Introductory speech made in English language seemed fascinating to them.
What a way of putting up a stamp in this school..

We are after all, English language teachers.

We were glad that things end up the way they were.......
We have arrived!

Later........................

We met a lovely lady, the PK1 of the school.
She was warm & welcoming and generous and kind towards us. 'Someone I aspire to be.......'
we had breakfast together and parted ways short after that.

I realized nothing much has changed since I left the school...

Same buildings...

Stood still just as how I remembered it..

The structure of our pride...

We shared good times and bad times...

Reminiscing our past achievements...

The joy and happiness of those moments..

.
.
.
.

It was a good day as I walked down the memory lane...

It was a good day to experience new things...

It's the start of a new journey.

I'm sure it will be challenging...

Do pray for my well being and success..

Until tomorrow................

ESCAPISM

It’s great how the human mind works. We distinguish between realities and fantasies. Often times the reality ain’t as pretty as we’d imagine. Thus we create another world, the fantasies, for us to escape from the harshness of reality around us.

For an unfortunate person like me, there isn’t much that I can do to run away from reality of my life. Maybe for some people, the options are endless. I can only be happy for few things in life and I’m grateful for that. I’m thankful to those people who made an effort to make my world alive.

Although behind those smiles and laughter, tears and emptiness soon follows. I am trapped in my own fate. *Chuckle*

It’s funny how this is the 1st time I ever been so honest. Maybe it’s damn hard to contain these feelings that I resort to writing poems. Not the 1st time that I try to explain my heart content through it. They are simply pure and honest representative of my silence.

Shakespeare said, life is as brief as the candle. Ironically, that is how I see my life.

A poet expresses things through poems. It doesn’t have to make sense. It’s just sheer expression that made it unique and special. It became my truth. My escapism… from time and time again.

Like Shakespeare, maybe someday someone will solve the puzzle pieces of my life. Although I doubt anyone can do it. :)

Title: A candle.

Pretty it stood, an ornament that warms the souls of its spectators

Being an honest actress putting up outstanding performance

Behind those acts, slowly it melts away,

slowly but surely…

It’s a fragile being.

Silently it burns itself away for the spectators to enjoy.

Behind those pains, it can only feel empty. Because that is how it was made.

Cold and empty inside.

When there is light, the wind blows and darkness consumes the room once again.

But the spectators lit it up to feel the warmth of its company.

Thus the actress dances to the rhythm of the moment.

The pain went away once again. But the emptiness continues.

Slowly but surely…

Everyday is like a clock. Ticking itself away without stopping for a second.

It’s like running a marathon without final destination.

Maybe the end is a total darkness.

….

Thanks for reading.

Now I can rest my weary soul… :)
